The first set of questions narrows down the long list of film schools to the few that are best for aspiring film makers. Whether you are choosing between the film departments of a major university or an autonomous film school the follow details are central to your search for the best film school.

• Is the film school accredited or credentialed?
• How long has the film school of film department been operating?
• Are the instructors industry experienced and highly respected?

Any film school that is not accredited or credentialed, has been active for a limited amount of time, or has inexperienced instructors will likely be a waste of time and money. The best film schools have been operating for long enough to have a proven record of producing successful film directors. Also, a film school worth your time and tuition will employ instructors who were or currently are respected professionals in the film industry. Most film schools list their instructors as well as highlights of their careers online. Do a little research and decide if the instructors are fit for molding you into the filmmaker you aspire to be.

The second set of questions determines your readiness to apply to film school. Talent only goes so far without a vehicle to exhibit that talent to an admissions board.

• Have you made and polished a short film?
• Do your writing skills match you visual skills?
• Do you have a completed resume?

Many of the best film schools require applicants to submit a sample short film. It is important to showcase your talent, so make multiple attempts and use the most interesting and creative results.   Also, some film students focus on cinematography, forgetting the importance of strong dialogue and a polished screenplay.
